@rapidfirepewpew: VR&E can be a maze. long waits, confusing rules, and inconsistent counselors. Document everything, ask questions early, and know your rights. You earned these benefits. Don't let the process wear you down.
My husband was denied because he was able to get a minimum wage job based on his qualifications.

I used VR&E when it was called Voc Rehab. I got them to pay for me to get my masters degree from the Harvard University Extension school. Vets should look up the Extension School. It’s a cool way to go to Harvard. It was also pretty sick to try BAH for Cambridge because it’s expensive as fuck there

I hurt my ankle and ended up applying to VR&E it was initially denied because I needed longer than they were willing to cover for the degree. I started school anyway and doubled up on classes. About 3 months later I reapplied and got accepted. Now I have a good job and 2 degrees. I’d say it’s a good benefit, but it isn’t guaranteed.

Currently using VR&E long term training after 15 years in my career field, my body just can’t do that type of work anymore. My counselor is pretty awesome, I started Grad school in August.

I got denied on everything but Insomnia whe. I got home from Afghanistan, I got Lawyers, they didn't do their job, I switched to the DAV, and after wit8mg for 10 years for my claim to be heard by a federal Judge, the DAV showed up late for my hearing, but I got boosted to 70% for PTSD, and the lawyers I had took 20% of my back pay. Now 6 years later I'm going for the physical issues. Wish me luck.

currently trying to use this benefit and have to get a lot of forms filled out by therapist, myself, and college I'm attempting to attend to get trained for a new job field that fits my disabilities. No one I'm working with apparently can do it right for my rep and I'll probably have to start the process again if my college advisor can't fill out requested info just right. Rep is vague and doesn't respond to clarifying questions. Even had an issue with how my therapist filled out 5 questions to prove I was seeking treatment because my therapist used word doc.

I was denied also, wanted a career change out of personal protection due to ptsd but since I currently was working I had gainful employment and therefore not eligible for their benefits. Bills don't pay themselves though and that doesn't matter to them. Was told thier primary focus is getting you a job and if you have one you don't need VR&E

I was overqualified because I hustled and got my masters degree. I can no longer do that job because of my injuries and I wanted help transitioning to another profession. The person told me just get a job in HR so they denied it.

The key to it is the reason that you would benefit more from this program has to playoff your current disabilities. So if you have anxiety, PTSD, cannot be in large groups of people… Then you’re gonna try to find some sort of a job or counselor or something where you’re not in large groups and then you also get special circumstances for the school. If you’re going back to school for that training. And it doesn’t have to be college, it could be Blue collar training jobs, welding, electrician… HVAC… Anything like that but you have to be able to tie it into why the government should pay for you to have this training to benefit you out of your current role that you’re currently employed in.

I’m using VRE for my aviation flight degree. It took 9 months to be approved, it felt like a job interview. They looked at my resume and C&P exams and asked multiple times “ how does being a pilot improve your conditions” and after all that my flight needed supervisor-level approval due to being high cost.

Love that veterans have access to this. If the veteran is rated 100% their dependents can also use this benefit. If you live in the state of Arkansas or Maine, they also have an additional military dependent scholarship offered which in return pays for any housing, cost or additional fees that the university may charge.

Its ridiculous how difficult it is to navigate these systems when you have been injured and are just trying to survive. Its pure negligence on their part.
