There are so many things happening in the Keith Lee and 2 Chainz exchange, but one of the biggest is classism and elitism. What 2 Chainz is expressing is elite solidarity and classism. He’s essentially telling Keith Lee that if he had come into the restaurant himself, his experience would have been different because of his celebrity status. But that’s the entire point of Keith Lee’s business model. He’s not reviewing restaurants based on how they treat millionaires and celebrities. He’s reviewing them based on how they treat everyday people. And what’s interesting is that 2 Chainz seems to expect Keith Lee, now that he’s a millionaire himself, to understand and accept this unspoken social hierarchy where people with wealth and status receive preferential treatment while the everyday working-class customer is treated differently. As if the people who made 2 Chainz who he is, from Titty Boi with DTP to now, aren’t the teachers, the nine-to-five workers, and the everyday people who saved their hard-earned money to buy his albums and attend his shows. Do those same people not deserve basic human decency and respect? Keith Lee’s business model is not wrong. And for 2 Chainz to sit there and attempt to reprimand him for giving an honest review of his restaurant, when other customers have expressed similar concerns, just goes to show that Black capitalism will not save us. There was frontstage and backstage behavior, social hierarchy, classism, and elitism all on display in that conversation. This idea that because you’ve ascended economically, you should not only receive preferential treatment but also participate in maintaining that same hierarchy. I’m not saying celebrities shouldn’t be treated well. I understand what celebrity exposure can do for a business. But that one or two days of viral attention isn’t what’s going to sustain your business. Whether you own a restaurant, cut hair, do hair, or provide any other service, it’s the everyday nine-to-five worker who is going to keep your business afloat. Period. And treating everyday customers like they’re a lick, like you’re conducting a drug deal instead of providing a service, as if spending their hard-earned money gives you the right to treat them however the fuck you want, is disgusting. Every time some of these celebrities open their mouths, they show you just how little they give a fuck about the very people who helped elevate them to the level they’re at today. That conversation was eye-opening. Not for me, but I hope it was eye-opening for some of you. Because I really need people to understand just how little regard some of these people you’ve made millionaires have for treating you with basic human decency and respect. #keithlee #2chainz #classism #socialcommentary #darianquanai
