⚡ From Ghana’s early political struggles to its latest international controversy, the NPP and its political predecessors have a long history of taking political battles beyond Ghana’s borders. The party’s political roots can be traced to the traditions of J.B. Danquah, K.A. Busia and earlier opposition movements. In the years following independence, the National Liberation Movement (NLM) and its allies opposed several policies of Kwame Nkrumah’s government. In June 1957, they even demanded that Queen Elizabeth II’s image, rather than Nkrumah’s, appear on Ghana’s national currency and postage stamps. The political rivalry continued through the years, with opposition figures challenging Nkrumah’s government over constitutional arrangements, political freedoms and the exercise of state power. Fast-forward to October 2026, and the NPP is once again taking a political dispute beyond Ghana’s borders. The party has petitioned the United States government, asking it to review diplomatic courtesies extended to certain Ghanaian diplomatic and service passport holders over alleged irregularities in their issuance. In its October 30 petition, signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party identified six individuals whose official positions it disputes. It also called for enhanced verification, an independent audit and the possible revocation of passports found to have been issued improperly. The controversy raises broader questions about the management of Ghana’s diplomatic privileges, the responsibilities of an opposition party and the potential international consequences of domestic political disputes. Whether one supports or opposes the NPP, one thing is clear: Ghana’s political history is filled with moments when disagreements over the country’s leadership and governance have extended beyond its borders. The bigger question now is whether this latest petition will lead to greater accountability or create further diplomatic complications for Ghana.
