Herpes, AIDS, being roofied, and other potentially permanent consequences of situations where alcohol or other substances impair your awareness and decision-making are not just traumatic and unforgettable experiences; they can also serve as lasting reminders of the risks associated with certain choices.
As we get older, our minds naturally begin to associate certain behaviors and situations with fear, risk, and negative outcomes. Sometimes, without even realizing it, we begin distancing ourselves from situations and decisions that once seemed harmless, exciting, or worth the risk.
Perhaps, at some point, we start telling ourselves that it’s time to stop or at least slow down—not necessarily because we’ve lost interest, but because we become more conscious of how much we have to lose. We begin to understand that some consequences are permanent, potentially life-changing, and not always within our control.
Ultimately, the question is no longer a matter of if, but when. Because continuing to put ourselves in those types of situations makes it only a matter of time before something goes wrong. And the reality is that some risks don’t come with second chances. The locks aren’t forever.
