As the month of November begins, the Catholic Church invites us to remember the faithful departed in a special way. Beyond the flowers we place on graves, the candles we light, and the memories we cherish, there is a spiritual work of love we can offer: PRAYER. November is traditionally dedicated to praying for the Holy Souls in Purgatory—those who have died in God's grace but still require purification before entering the perfect holiness of heaven. Death does not erase our love for those who have gone before us. Neither does it end the Church's call to pray for the dead. ✝️ 𝗪𝗛𝗢 𝗔𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗬 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗦? The Catholic Church teaches that those who die in God's grace and friendship, but are not yet perfectly purified, undergo purification before entering the joy of heaven. This purification is called PURGATORY. It is not a second chance at salvation, nor is it a place where the faithful must remain forever. It is the final purification of those who belong to God and are destined for heaven. The souls being purified are already assured of their eternal salvation. Our prayers for them express our love and our belief in the communion of saints. ✝️ 𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗗𝗢 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗦 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗗𝗘𝗔𝗗? Because love does not simply disappear at death. The Church encourages us to offer prayers, the Holy Mass, and other acts of charity for the faithful departed, entrusting them to God's mercy. Scripture tells us: “It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.” — 2 Maccabees 12:46 (Douay-Rheims) This passage has long been important in the Catholic understanding of prayer for the dead. ✝️ 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗖𝗔𝗡 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗬 𝗦𝗢𝗨𝗟𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦 𝗡𝗢𝗩𝗘𝗠𝗕𝗘𝗥? It is also a reminder that our earthly lives are temporary and that we are called to prepare our souls to meet God. Let the remembrance of those who have died inspire you to forgive more readily, love more sincerely, repent of sin, and live faithfully. We do not know the final state of every soul. We entrust the departed to God's perfect justice and mercy, while continuing to pray for them with Christian hope. ✝️ 𝗔 𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬𝗘𝗥 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗙𝗔𝗜𝗧𝗛𝗙𝗨𝗟 𝗗𝗘𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗘𝗗 “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
