The foot and ankle complex plays a critical role in running performance and injury resilience. During running, the foot and ankle absorb forces that can exceed 2–3 times body weight with every step, store and release elastic energy, provide stability, and adapt to changing terrain. Research shows that poor foot and ankle strength, calf capacity, balance, and proprioception are linked to an increased risk of running-related injuries throughout the lower extremity. The foot contains intrinsic muscles that help maintain arch integrity and contribute to efficient movement, while the calf complex is essential for both shock absorption and propulsion. Weakness or poor control in these regions can alter load distribution and increase stress on surrounding tissues. By improving foot and ankle strength, proprioception, and neuromuscular control, runners can: - Improve force absorption and distribution during landing
- Enhance running efficiency and energy transfer
- Increase stability on uneven terrain and during single-leg loading
- Improve tendon and bone capacity to tolerate training demands
- Reduce injury risk and improve training consistency These are some of my favorite foot and ankle exercises! They are often included in a prehab / rehab plan for a variety of conditions, including ankle sprains, achilles tendonitis, posterior tibial and peroneal tendinopathies, calf injuries, and general foot and ankle strength. Let’s work together! If you’re interested in virtual options, @gorunstronger offers personalized run coaching, strength coaching, virtual consultations, injury-specific programs, training plans, and our monthly strength subscription through the app/ For in-person physical therapy and running assessments, you can book an appointmen with me at Healthy Baller in Washington, DC.
