THIS IS HUGE: A Texas district attorney just got an ICE agent indicted for running over an innocent construction worker, and says an ICE badge does not give anyone free rein to injure or kill Harris County DA Sean Teare didn't wait for ICE to police itself. He took it to a grand jury. According to The Guardian, ICE agent Mario Alberto Morales, 33, was indicted Friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Oct. 10 in Houston, Morales swerved his SUV into Miguel Parra Hernandez, 48, a construction worker with no criminal record and no active deportation order, fracturing his legs and injuring his hip. Parra Hernandez wasn't even the target. He was running across a restaurant parking lot after Morales tried to stop a pickup truck and two men jumped out and fled. Teare said the evidence was as clear as any he's ever prosecuted. He also told reporters that Morales, hired by ICE in August 2025 as part of its immigration surge, wouldn't have been hired by any law enforcement agency he's familiar with, based on his past. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez added that when the SUV hit Parra Hernandez, it also had two handcuffed detainees in the back seat. He said he knows of no law enforcement agency that would find that acceptable. The Guardian reports ICE named a man named Jose Mendoza-Cervantes as the target and released a photo of him. But the person in the photo was Jose Hector Jimenez, who died in 2017 while being pursued by immigration authorities, according to the Houston advocacy group FIEL. Teare said ICE deported at least two material witnesses within a week of the crash, over his objection. Parra Hernandez is still in ICE custody and facing deportation court dates while he's unable to leave a rehab facility. ICE called the allegations reckless and false and said local governments lack the authority to investigate federal officers. Teare's answer was simple: an ICE badge does not give you free rein to injure, kill, or violate the constitutional rights of anyone. His office is also investigating the July shooting death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo by ICE in Houston. The DA looked at the evidence, took it to a grand jury, and made an ICE agent answer for it.
