“She was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation.” That is what NASA chief Jared Isaacman wrote about Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, the 20-year-old co-pilot of the Learjet that went down in Florida. Isaacman says he has flown aircraft like this for more than 20 years, with over 8,000 hours. Writing in his personal capacity, he said what troubled him most was people “critiquing this poor woman’s final radio calls.” The captain had the final say on the flight. “She was the second-in-command (SIC), and while she was empowered to point out mistakes as part of good crew resource management, she was doing her job, communicating with ATC right to the end in a terrifying situation,” he wrote. “I have heard final calls from friends, from military pilots with thousands of hours in fighter aircraft, and they are just as heartbreaking because they know the end is approaching,” he added. To those questioning her place in that seat, he explained: “The charter industry routinely hires commercial pilots very early in their careers to gain experience alongside an ATP-qualified captain before they move up to the airlines. She would still have the appropriate training, qualifications, and checkouts by an FAA examiner or designee.” He also urged people to stop speculating. “You do not know the aircraft’s maintenance history, whether there was a structural failure, if any failure was induced by turbulence, overspeed, or overcontrol, or everything happening in that cockpit,” he wrote. “I am sure weather will be part of the investigation, but beyond that, it is speculation.” His message: “Let people investigate, learn, and share the facts. Be respectful to those who perished and the families who carry their memories. God bless them and their loved ones.” Nathalia grew up in Palm Beach County. She learned to fly from her father, a pilot, and earned her pilot’s license at 17, before she had a driver’s license. On Sunday, her Learjet 60 was flying from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when the crew reported ice and turbulence and declared an emergency. All 9 people on board lost their lives. Rest in peace, Nathalia, and all 9 on board. 🕊️ It is truly one of the most heartbreaking accidents in recent years, especially after listening to the air traffic control recording. On Sunday morning, 9 people boarded Learjet 60 N722BD in Austin, Texas. They were flying to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. None of them made it there. Over South Florida, at 35,000 feet, the pilot told the controller it was minus 47 degrees outside. “We’re managing the ice, but it is moderate turbulence,” she said. Then the jet flew into precipitation and she asked to climb. Moments later came the mayday. The jet was falling at 10,000 feet per minute. Then 20,000. The controller stayed on the radio with her. “I’m here with you. Talk to me,” he said. The last words from the cockpit were “We’re out of time.” The FAA says the jet fell from 35,000 feet to under 9,000 feet in about a minute. At 12:50 PM it came down on Military Trail in Greenacres, between homes and a busy road. A man nearby said he thought the sound was thunder. All 9 people on board lost their lives. Not a single person on the ground was hurt. About 600 residents of the mobile home community next to the site were moved to shelters. To the pilots, to the passengers, and to everyone who loved them: we are so sorry. May they rest in peace. 🕊️
