An 18-year-old Indiana man has been charged after police say he seriously injured a 9-day-old baby by repeatedly biting the infant’s face in an attempt to stop the child from crying. According to court records, Kaden Manuel Lewis Shrum was charged on July 29 with felony battery causing bodily injury to a child younger than 14. The investigation began on July 15 after a pediatrician alerted authorities about a newborn with severe bruising covering the left side of the baby’s face. Bloomington police and the Indiana Department of Child Services responded, and the infant was transported to a regional hospital for further evaluation. Doctors determined the injuries were consistent with human bite marks, according to investigators. Police say Shrum later admitted to relatives and detectives that he caused the injuries while caring for the newborn. Investigators allege he told them the baby began crying around 4 a.m. and that he first tried to soothe the infant by lightly “nibbling” the child’s cheek before escalating to repeatedly biting down on the baby’s face. Authorities said Shrum allegedly remarked afterward that the infant’s face looked like a “busted up egg.” Investigators concluded the baby’s injuries matched Shrum’s account, leading to his arrest on the child battery charge. Court records also show Shrum is facing separate criminal cases involving felony charges of battery with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness, along with an unrelated misdemeanor battery charge. Those cases remain pending. If convicted in the child abuse case, Shrum could face several years in prison under Indiana law. He was booked into the Monroe County Jail and later released after posting a $5,000 bond. His jury trial is currently scheduled to begin on Jan. 11, 2027.#crime #fyp #viral
