@inakabumpkin: specific garbage rules of MY small japanese town #inaka #lifeinjapan thank u for all the dms and comments, i’m sorry i cant reply to all of them
honestly one of the main reasons why living in japan is less fun is the garbage collection. living with 6 full bags of empty bottles and cans in a 15m2 apartment waiting for next tuesday to come is not nice

Crazy stuff. A modern country would sort everything at the garbage dump.

I wonder how 3+ family households manage their waste. Like if they have a baby, where do they keep used diapers?

I know it's better for the environment, but the trash system was my number one enemy for the 3 years I lived in Japan 😭 I feel like we need a middle ground between the American "throw away almost anything as long as it's trash day" and Japan's system

I’ve heard Japan has a lot of complex bureaucracies, was that intimidating moving as a foreigner?

call me an idiot, but wouldn't be more efficient to have collection points scattered across towns so you can actually stop waiting for weird days or even weeks?

Jokes on you here in Switzerland 🇨🇭 the bags cost 400 yen per bag. But at least they are not transparent. However they sample them and check content. If they can trace you back you get tremendous fines.

I feel like Japan would do really well with a bottle deposit system like we have in Germany. We pay 0,25€ extra per bottle and when we return them to any grocery store we get the money back. That way everything still gets properly recycled, but you can bring away bottles as often as you want and don't have to have them lying around.

Despite being a Japanese word, bokashi seems seldom used in Japan, nor organic indoor compost. I used it when I lived in Tokyo and it was very practical and spacesaving, as well as odourfree.
