@thepundit37: On September 11, 2001, Lieutenant Colonel Marilyn Wills was inside the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 struck the building. She was in a second-floor conference room when the explosion threw her across the room, knocked out the lights and filled the area with smoke. Wills began crawling through the darkness, trying to find a way out while people around her struggled to breathe. A colleague named Lois grabbed onto her, and when the woman said she could not continue, Wills told her to get on her back. Wills then carried her while crawling through the damaged building, later realizing that several other people were following them toward an escape route. Her sweater also became an unexpected tool for survival. After the explosion, Wills used it to help filter the smoke and allowed others to use it as they made their way through the building. Eventually, the group reached a second-floor window that rescuers had opened, and people were helped out of the Pentagon. Wills did not simply escape and leave. She remained near the window and used her voice to direct other people toward the opening until thick smoke and flames forced her to evacuate. Her actions were later recognized with the Soldier's Medal for heroism. The Pentagon attack killed 125 people inside the building and all 64 people aboard Flight 77. Amid that enormous loss were countless individual acts of courage, often carried out by ordinary people suddenly placed in extraordinary circumstances. Marilyn Wills survived with serious injuries, but her story is remembered because she made a decision in the middle of chaos to keep helping the people around her. Her actions on that morning helped others find a way out when visibility was almost nonexistent and every second mattered.
