@useinkling: time yourself: SN1, SN2, E1 or E2 for all 4 reactions in under a minute 👇 search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app how to tell SN1, SN2, E1 and E2 apart for orgo 1 midterm 2. the four reactions are A 1-bromopropane with NaCN in DMSO, B tert-butyl bromide (2-bromo-2-methylpropane) in water at room temperature, C tert-butyl bromide with sodium ethoxide (NaOEt) in ethanol, and D 2-bromo-2-methylbutane in ethanol with heat. the answers are on slide 2. ask three questions in order. first, is the leaving group on a 1°, 2° or 3° carbon? a 1° carbon cannot make a stable carbocation, so it goes SN2 (or E2 with a bulky base), and a 3° carbon cannot do SN2 because it is too crowded for backside attack. second, is the nucleophile or base strong or weak? a strong base like NaOEt on a 3° halide gives E2 in one step, while a weak nucleophile like water or ethanol gives the carbocation path, SN1 or E1. third, is there heat? with a weak base on a 3° halide, no heat favors SN1 substitution and heat tips it to E1 elimination, which gives the more substituted alkene (Zaitsev). two traps on slide 3: a 2° halide with a strong base like NaOEt goes E2, not SN2, and a 2° halide with iodide in acetone still goes SN2 because iodide is a good nucleophile and a weak base.
