Whether you are ready or not, it is once again #UshyGushyMushy season. I couldn’t let November go by without reminding you all of the fantastically moist mushrooms that can be found in the forest this time of year. . Here I pay tribute to the multitude of impressively goopy jelly fungi and wet pileuses! Most of these gelatinous growths belong to the Tremellaceae family, which are evolutionarily ancient mushrooms that occur on decaying wood. The ecology of these fungi is fascinating as they are actually parasitizing the mycelium of other species in the wood (as opposed to rotting the wood itself) and in their asexual/haploid state they can exist as single celled yeasts capable of causing disease in humans. The jellies that grow on conifers are in Dacrymycetaceae, which are pure saprotrophs rather than parasitic. . As always, I recognize this content can be polarizing. It’s so interesting to me how these videos elicit reactions that span the full gamut of human emotion; from revulsion to adoration, outrage to amusement, feeling skeeved out to weirdly turned on. Some people love the squishy squelchy noises while others find them revolting or downright disgusting. Regardless of what you feel, these videos have garnered millions of views worldwide while transcending languages and cultural backgrounds - demonstrating that humans everywhere feel a deep connection with ushy gushy fungi. . Content like this is part of my educational strategy to expose people to mushrooms, this video is intended to be emotionally evocative. I am demonstrating that mushrooms are safe to touch and handle. Humans have been anthropomorphizing mushrooms for millennia, I’m not doing anything new here (calm down Karen). No disrespect intended, I love nature. Please keep the feedback civil and be kind to each other - the world is difficult enough as it is. . Keep the projections and personal judgements to a minimum, this is art. If you are rude in the comments, I will ask you to read the caption. . . . #jellyfungus #ushygushy #witchesbutter #mushroomasmr
