U.S. health officials are defending the CDC’s response to the hantavirus outbreak tied to a cruise ship in the Canary Islands, saying the situation remains under control as exposed Americans return home. Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” acting CDC Director Jay Bhattacharya said federal agencies are actively coordinating with the World Health Organization and Spanish health officials while monitoring passengers potentially exposed to the virus. The outbreak has already claimed three lives aboard the ship. Bhattacharya pushed back against criticism that the CDC reacted too slowly after the outbreak was identified earlier this month, insisting the agency has been working behind the scenes with international partners from the beginning. The controversy comes amid concerns over staffing cuts at the CDC under the Trump administration, including reductions within the agency’s ship sanitation program. So far, seven Americans who were aboard the cruise have already returned to states including California, Texas, Arizona and Virginia. Another 17 passengers are expected to be flown to a federal quarantine facility in Omaha, Nebraska, for evaluation before being cleared to continue home.
