Long before millions of viewers knew her as Helen Willis on The Jeffersons, Roker had fallen in love with Sy Kravitz, a white Jewish television producer. The couple married in 1962, at a time when interracial relationships were still deeply controversial in America. Their son, Lenny Kravitz, would later become one of the world's biggest rock stars. But their love came with a price. Lenny has spoken openly about what his parents experienced while he was growing up. He recalled hearing stories of people spitting at them in the street and places where they weren't welcome simply because they were an interracial couple. And even inside Sy's own family, their relationship wasn't immediately accepted. Sy's parents struggled with the fact that Roxie was not Jewish — and that she was Black.
