for those people wondering: The scientists took sheep muscle cells and inserted a specific Woolly Mammoth gene called myoglobin (the protein responsible for meat's flavor, color, and aroma). They then grew these cells in a lab without using or harming any live animals. Key Details About the Mammoth Meatball: How it was made: They extracted the genetic code for mammoth myoglobin, filled in a few small missing gaps using African Elephant DNA, and placed that gene sequence into sheep cells. Why they did it: It was created to demonstrate the possibilities of lab-grown (cultivated) meat as a sustainable alternative to traditional farming. Has anyone eaten it? No. Because human immune systems haven't interacted with mammoth proteins in over 4,000 years, scientists haven't tasted it yet to avoid potential allergic reactions. The creators did note that while cooking it, it smelled a bit like cooked crocodile meat
