What happened to Prophet Yunus? Allah sent Yunus to his people, but he left them before Allah gave him permission to leave. He boarded a ship, and after lots were drawn, he was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a great fish. While in darkness, Yunus called upon Allah: “There is no deity except You; glory be to You! Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” - Qur’an 21:87 Allah accepted his repentance and rescued him. The Qur’an says: “So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.” - Qur’an 21:88 His people Interestingly, Yunus’s people believed and repented, and Allah spared them from punishment: “Why was there not a town that believed so its faith benefited it, except the people of Yunus?” - Qur’an 10:98 The lesson The story of Yunus emphasizes repentance, patience, and never losing hope in Allah. His famous supplication is particularly important because Allah presents it as a means of being rescued from distress.
