This hits very close to home. Vieques, Puerto Rico, is my little island, and David Sanes was my uncle. I was a teenager when this happened. My uncle wasn’t even originally scheduled to work in the tower. Someone called out, and because he was known for taking overtime, they called him to cover the shift. He agreed. My grandfather was also supposed to work that day, but switched shifts so he could take my grandmother to a doctor’s appointment. Then tragedy struck. I remember the phone calls, the confusion, and the devastation that followed. When the security footage later became public, the reality of what happened was heartbreaking. The entire island was shaken, and people took to the streets in protest. My uncle was a hardworking man who loved taking overtime. He had no idea that accepting that shift would change our family forever. Rest in peace, Uncle David Sanes. Vieques remembers. 🇵🇷❤️
