Matt Perry was insufferable, full of himself, and convinced he was smarter than everyone else…and he used that as an excuse to keep using. If you read his book he really thought he was a super, super, special, ONE OF A KIND, type of addict. And, ultimately that approach was a what killed him. After listening to his audio book read by himself, i cannot look at him with anything but disgust.

Hot take: the old dude is right. I personally come from what’s surely a long line of addicts and alcoholic, and although there was a time when I was sure to follow in family tradition, I never did. I quit drinking over 5Y ago, it wasn’t hard, I just decided that I was more valuable. I’ve quit smoking, I’ve been celibate for long time. Ironically, my life has gotten drastically harder since I gave up everything that made it kinda fun, but I haven’t wavered. I also have a background in medical biology, so I understand the research, I just know for a fact that a predisposition to something doesn’t mean you absolutely have to do it or become it.

All I know is alcohol ruined my life, and almost ended it as well. I decided to quit the booze and I'm coming up on 13 years of sobriety. We do recover. 🫡

As an alcoholic I can say that when I drink I am bodily and mentally different from a normal drinker. Once a drink hits my lips I am on to absolute destruction. What I have built in 14 years of sobriety will burn to the ground in 48 hours.

I believe an addiction is NOT a disease. It’s easier for someone with an addiction to claim it is a disease and that means it’s not their fault

And see it’s common sense, but Matthew Perry sitting there it’s because he was high to begin with on the show and he’s looking for the boo-hoo story well the fact is that he trashed everybody else who cleaned up and he was still the kind of person who was I’m not ready to quit well fine you’re not ready to quit, but if the government stepped in and made him spend time in rehab properly like doing three years in prison, he probably would’ve cleaned up properly and still be alive
