“I’m five weeks pregnant and very iron deficient. Which prenatal with iron should I take?” This is where I look at your prenatal and your iron treatment as two separate decisions. A prenatal supports your broader nutritional needs. Treating iron deficiency requires an appropriate iron dose, chosen around your ferritin, haemoglobin, symptoms and stage of pregnancy. Having iron on the ingredient list doesn’t automatically mean a prenatal provides enough to correct a deficiency. That’s why I often prefer an iron-free prenatal with iron prescribed separately. It gives us more flexibility with the amount, timing and formulation, especially if nausea or constipation are already making supplements difficult. Absorption matters too. Calcium can reduce iron absorption when taken at the same time, as can tea and coffee. Separating your iron from these by around two hours can help. The dose and frequency also need to fit your results. “One capsule” tells us very little without knowing how much elemental iron it contains. And we need follow-up blood tests to check that your treatment is working. If you’re pregnant and already iron deficient, arrange a review with your GP, midwife or obstetrician so you have a treatment plan early. At Nourishing Apothecary, we can help review your nutrition and supplement routine alongside your pregnancy care. For individual support, start with a free discovery call with Mel or Chloe. Liverpool, Sydney and Australia wide via Zoom. #IronInPregnancy #IronDeficiency #PrenatalVitamins #PregnancyNutrition #NourishingApothecary
