@dihcheeseawards: I don’t wanna have to rely on the uncertain of a scholarship and applying just to not be able to get it. I also get gov funds but that’s goes to pay my tuition which makes the tuition free but I hate having to ask for money for basic things such as food, getting my hair done(I’m black), and Hygenie products. I also need a car and they refused to let me go to driving school in high school when I even came up with the money to do so. I don’t even have my license. #fyp #college #parents #18 #uni

If they aren’t paying they don’t really get a say, save up all the money you can and apply to as many scholarships as you can

I recommend getting an on-campus job if you can!! They may not always pay quite as well, but they are typically make sure you are able to prioritize school and work around your class schedule. Some even let you do homework on the clock.

having a job while in college can be hard but as long as you still prioritize school, it’s fine. Having your own money is also super nice. Get a job & keep applying to scholarships, maximize ur resources!

do both queen!! you will feel 10x more independent. get anything and everything you can out of scholarships and then you can have extra spending money from a job. I would look at on-campus jobs first since you dont have a car. Any money that you dont need to spend can go towards driving lessons and a car or put into a savings account for an apartment or future house. Your parents probably just want you to focus on your grades which is understandable but being independent is an important aspect of college

my parents did the same thing to me, i got a job while in college and was totally fine, most times colleges put a limit to how many hours you can work so it won’t affect your grades or studying time. relying on just scholarships is scary and unreliable, especially at times like now. they probably wanna have financial control to still have a way to control you as an adult.

You can look at student positions. They encourage you to take off before a big test so you can study and are low hour jobs so school work balance is kept. Depending on the degree some professors hire students so you can have experience in your field. I'm a biology student with a resume full of research and presentations from working with 1 professor

in college/nursing school, I had 2-3 jobs at a time. im so much more productive when I stay busy. I also had alot of downtime at my jobs where I could study (nightshift CNA/ lifeguard pool parties on weekends). I also worked as a server for a little while and you can have short shifts working around school and still make alot of money. also, work study is a GREAT option while in college. As a manager now, I definitely pay attention to those I hire who show that they were hard workers during the past and having any job while in school is proof of that.

Even with scholarships, I had a part time job in college because that was my grocery money. That was my getting coffee money. That was my buying clothes money. You can definitely get by on just the refund you get (as long as you're getting one) and a dining plan, but I genuinely needed some of that "fun money" that I didn't feel guilty spending.

no. if you can handle the workload its not bad to work a few hours a week. you can actually qualify for other scholarships if you are working sometimes

I worked part time as a workstudy all through my 5 years of college AND I had to take 16 hours of classes to keep my state grants. its doable IF youre able to find a job that will work with your school schedule. campus jobs are the best if you can secure one. most part time jobs at stores or restaurants, etc. will say they will work around your school hours, but they wont be as flexible in reality. Workstudy jobs will pay less, and theres also a firm cap to how much they'll let you work, BUT they are the most flexible and they will prioritize your schooling much more.

If you can get a part time job in or related to your field do that! It will help a lot once you graduate and apply for full time jobs. If you can’t a retail or server job is good just for a few shifts a week. It also depends on how well you handle school. If you aren’t great at school or in a very test heavy major I would hold off on it. If you don’t really need to study for exams and are in a paper/project heavy major, you can work 30 hours a week like I did.
