My final governor prediction has Democrats finishing with 27 governorships and Republicans with 23, with four Democratic flips and one Republican flip. I expect Democrats to pick up Iowa, Ohio, Georgia, and Alaska, while Republicans flip Kansas. The national environment should help Democrats, but I think candidate quality and local issues will make a big difference in several of these races. In Iowa, I think Rob Sand’s moderate image will help him flip the governor’s office. Ohio is much closer, but I have Amy Acton barely winning because of the Republican candidate’s weaknesses and scandals. Georgia is a complete toss-up, although I think Keisha Lance Bottoms will narrowly edge it out. Alaska could be one of the bigger surprises: I expect Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins to win considerably more comfortably than many people anticipate because of local issues and the state’s willingness to support independent-minded candidates. I have Democrats narrowly holding Wisconsin with David Crowley, while Jocelyn Benson wins Michigan relatively comfortably. I also expect Katie Hobbs to win Arizona comfortably. Tina Kotek’s weaknesses make Oregon more competitive, but I still think she holds on by a reasonably comfortable margin. Nevada is my closest Republican hold, with Joe Lombardo winning by a hair. Elsewhere, I expect Nebraska to be closer than many people think, while Texas stays Republican by a somewhat narrower margin. Florida should remain a comfortable Republican win, despite expectations that it could become more competitive. Kansas is my only Republican pickup, giving Democrats a net gain of three governorships overall. Several of these races could go either way, but this is my final map heading into election night. #electionday #governor #midtermelections #politics #trump
