He grew up facing financial difficulties and found in martial arts a way to change his life. At a young age, he left school to pursue his dream of becoming a professional fighter. His professional career began in 2009. After successful performances on the regional scene, he caught the attention of WEC. Following the organization’s merger with the UFC in 2011, he became part of the biggest MMA organization in the world. Poirier initially competed at featherweight, but it was at lightweight where he reached the peak of his career. Throughout his career, Poirier built a reputation as a true warrior, participating in some of the most exciting fights in UFC history. He defeated notable fighters such as Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Eddie Alvarez, and Michael Chandler. He also defeated Conor McGregor twice in 2021, becoming one of the greatest lightweights of all time. In 2019, he defeated Max Holloway and won the interim UFC Lightweight Championship, but lost the unification bout to Khabib Nurmagomedov. Later, Poirier also fought for the undisputed title against Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev, but lost both championship opportunities. Although Poirier never captured the undisputed UFC championship, he earned enormous respect through his performances, character, and relentless fighting spirit.
