A California woman is facing several criminal charges after authorities say she struck and killed a teenage boy who was crossing the street while holding his girlfriend’s hand. According to court records, 35-year-old Tiffany Mercado has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, and reckless driving causing injury in connection with the death of 15-year-old Juliani “Gio” Moreno. Officials say additional charges related to driving under the influence are also being pursued. The crash happened at about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Mendocino and Parlier avenues in the city of Parlier, located in the Fresno area. Gio and his girlfriend, Mercedes Solano, were walking through a crosswalk on their way to a nearby store when the vehicle struck them. Solano later described the terrifying moment during an interview with local NBC affiliate KSEE. She said the two were walking side by side and holding hands when the impact happened suddenly. “It all happened so fast. It felt like an explosion,” she said, recalling how Gio disappeared from her side in an instant. Moments later, she said she spotted him lying in a nearby field after being thrown by the force of the crash. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Gio had already died at the scene. Solano suffered an injury to her leg from debris but did not sustain life-threatening injuries. Police say that after hitting the teenagers, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a nearby flower shop. Mercado was later taken into custody. Gio was a freshman and football player at Immanuel High School, according to a GoFundMe page created for his family. Solano said he had been excited about upcoming summer football activities, including 7-on-7 drills with his team. She also shared that he had planned to travel with her to Montana during the summer. Solano added that moments before crossing the street, the two had switched sides — meaning she might have been the one struck by the car. The owner of the flower shop that was hit by the vehicle said the business would normally have been open at the time of the crash, but they happened to close earlier than usual that evening. “We’re lucky we weren’t here,” owner Hermina Lopez told KSEE, explaining that the shop typically closes at 6 p.m., but staff decided to shut down a little early that day. City leaders also responded to the tragedy. Parlier Mayor Alma Beltran said the community is rallying around the teen’s family as they cope with the loss. “No family should ever have to experience something like this,” Beltran wrote in a Facebook post, adding that officials are working to fully understand what happened and ensure accountability. Mercado is currently being held in the Fresno County Jail without bail, and her next court appearance is scheduled for March 25.#fyp #viral
