Three years ago, I had never seen a stoma in real life. Now I have two. 🤍 If I could go back and sit beside the version of me who was about to have her first stoma, I don't think I'd tell her not to be scared. Because she was scared. And she had every right to be. I wouldn't tell her that everything was going to be okay, because the truth is, the years ahead were going to ask more of her than she could possibly imagine. I'd just tell her this: You're going to survive things you don't even have words for yet. Your body is going to change. Change. And then change again. You're going to wake up with a urostomy and learn how to live in a body you barely recognise. And just when that body starts to feel like yours again, you're going to find yourself doing it all over again with an ileostomy and jejunostomy tube. There will be days you hate them. Days you're grateful for them. Days you don't even think about them. And one day, believe it or not, you're going to voluntarily take a photograph showing both of those bags and put it on the internet😂 Not because you've suddenly decided that having stomas is easy. Not because you've learned to love every part of what happened to you. But because somewhere along the way, you stopped believing that this body was something you needed to hide. Three years ago, i couldn't of told you a thing about stoma bags. Today, I'm a double ostomate, proudly sharing the body I once couldn't imagine living in. So for World Ostomy Day, this one is for the version of me who was terrified of the unknown, and for anyone standing where she once stood. You don't have to love your stoma. You don't have to be positive about it every day. You don't have to rush acceptance. Just give yourself the chance to meet the person you'll become on the other side. Happy World Ostomy Day from me and my two little life-changing bags✨ #doubleostomate #feedingtube #stoma #intestinalfailure #tpn
