I just retired from teaching in Vietnam after the last school year. Most recently I taught public secondary school. Half of about 14 groups of students would also often do this salute, to see how I would react (I ignored it), and some of them deeply studied Hitler and would enthusiastically share this info with me. I'm not saying this like I think something alarming or disturbing is happening, I'm just sharing my experience. I think they're mostly doing it kinda "as a meme."

Vietnam's Ministry of Education truly has major issues. In textbooks teaching children abt courage, they claim that 'walking on shards of broken glass' is a sign of bravery, while compassion is pigeonholed as 'donating organs to others' instead of loving parents, teachers, and friends... It's utterly rotten, so pls don't blame the children too much - blame the mechanical teaching standing behind those children instead!!! Hope this reaches ppl from other parts of world!

I teach 5th grade in Vietnam and I struggle with kids doing this in class all the time. I have to have very serious conversations with each class at least once a year on why I will not tolerate it. I also spend most of my time getting these kids to think outside the box and develop their own words and opinions instead of seeking answers in memorization and regurgitation. it's absolutely magical when it finally starts to happen tho

I think we can look at the caveat that he is 17-18 ish from a relatively sheltered environment, but that doesn’t take away the accountability. I am, for once, glad that this happened since it was live TV so that we are all can be alarmed and have a conversation about this. Lesson must be learned on how Vietnamese students be able to learn world’s history with empathy and nuances. Highschool’s materials on world’s history during my years were relatively surface. We learnt the general facts and timeline of major world wars, cold war, and end at the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, all of the energy and attention were clearly dedicated to the wars against France, US, and China from 1850 til present days.

Taught and lived in Vietnam for nearly a decade. The methodology that is predominantly used in most Asian countries, is colloquially referred to as rote learning. Just memorising stuff out of books and focusing on only that. Not reading and understanding a context of a text. Which is an entirely different skill set and an extremely difficult one to learn. Thinking outside the box and considering all the consequences of the 'fact' is a skill set that is counter to the established norm of the education system in most of Asia. Unfortunately. However it seems you've been able to develop that skill and I hope you'll use it to good effect. ✌😎🥰
