Not every medication that works for an adult is safe for a child. And not every medication a child is given is necessarily needed. In this video, I discuss some medications parents and caregivers should be particularly careful about when giving them to children: 1. Ciprofloxacin: An antibiotic that should not be used routinely in children or given simply because typhoid is suspected. It has specific indications and should be prescribed based on proper clinical assessment. 2. Cough syrups: Many over-the-counter cough preparations have limited evidence of benefit in children. Some contain ingredients that can cause excessive drowsiness, neurological effects and other serious side effects, particularly when misused or given in inappropriate doses. 3. Steroid medications and steroid-containing creams: These can be very useful when appropriately prescribed, but prolonged or excessive use, especially of potent steroids, can cause significant side effects. Some medicated creams marketed for rashes or itching contain potent steroids, so always check the active ingredients. This is not to say that these medications should never be used in children. There are clinical situations where their benefits outweigh their potential risks. The important thing is that they should be used for the right indication, at the right dose, for the appropriate duration, and under appropriate medical guidance. As a parent, you have the right to ask: * Why does my child need this medication? * What benefit should I expect? * What are the possible side effects? * Is it appropriate for my child’s age and weight? Please don’t give children medications simply because they worked for another child or because they are readily available at a pharmacy. Children are not simply small adults. Their medications require particular care. Share this with a parent or caregiver who needs to hear it. #tallnigeriandoctor #draizident
