@raysaigraphics: JIMMY SHARPE From a championship player to a championship assistant. A Montgomery, Alabama, native, Jimmy Sharpe played guard for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant and was part of the Crimson Tide’s 1961 national-championship team. His Alabama story continued on the sideline. Sharpe served on Bryant’s coaching staff from 1963–73, working with the offensive line. During those 11 seasons, Alabama won three national championships and six SEC titles. University season records identify him among Bryant’s assistants, and historical reporting confirms his role and championship résumé. In 1974, he became Virginia Tech’s head coach and brought the wishbone offense to Blacksburg. He led the program for four seasons, compiling a 21–22–1 record. His best season came in 1975, when Tech finished 8–3. But his connection to Alabama remained. Years later, the Crimson Tide welcomed Sharpe back as an honorary captain alongside fellow former Alabama player and coach Bill “Brother” Oliver. A player on Bryant’s first Alabama national-championship team. An assistant who helped sustain the program’s success. A head coach who carried those lessons forward. Remembering Jimmy Sharpe’s place in Crimson Tide history. Roll Tide. — Elephant Ink
