The U.S. Treasury Department says a new payment verification system has identified nearly $99 million in federal payments tied to individuals who were already deceased before the money was sent. According to the agency, more than 885 million payments totaling nearly $2.77 trillion have been screened through the new process. The system flagged about 4,900 payments, worth roughly $99 million, which were sent back to the appropriate federal agencies for review before any funds were released. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the effort fulfills a key goal of the Trump administration by strengthening safeguards against fraud and preventing improper payments before taxpayer money leaves the Treasury. The expanded verification process stems from a March 2025 executive order signed by President Donald Trump aimed at improving fraud detection and reducing waste across federal agencies. The announcement also follows broader efforts by the administration to crack down on government waste, including initiatives previously led by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which fell short of its long-term spending reduction goals. Earlier this year, Congress passed the bipartisan Ending Improper Payments to Deceased People Act, permanently allowing the Treasury to access the Social Security Administration’s Full Death Master File. Officials say the database helps ensure payments are not mistakenly issued to people who have died. Treasury had previously been granted temporary access through a pilot program that projected hundreds of millions of dollars in savings by reducing improper payments#fyp #viral
