Palm Beach County, Florida, USA — Nathalia Gadelha, a 20-year-old aviator, has been identified by her family as the co-pilot aboard the Learjet 60 that crashed in South Florida, killing all nine people on board. According to the New York Post, Gadelha's mother, Camila, and her stepfather confirmed that she was among the crew members aboard the aircraft traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas on Sunday, November 1. The aircraft reportedly entered an extremely rapid descent before crashing into a residential neighborhood near Cresthaven in Palm Beach County. Air traffic control recordings captured the crew reporting icing, moderate turbulence and precipitation shortly before the emergency. The aircraft subsequently descended at an extraordinary rate before crashing. Gadelha had previously attracted attention for achieving an impressive aviation milestone at a young age. In October 2023, when she was just 17 and a senior at West Boca Raton High School, she obtained her private pilot's license before getting her driver's license. During an interview with CBS12, she joked about her unusual achievement: “I definitely do brag because people say, ‘Oh, you can’t drive,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, but I can fly,'” She explained that she started pilot training in 2020 and also learned from her father, who had taken up flying as a hobby in 2018. The Palm Beach County School District's Aviation Academy supported her pilot training. At the time of her interview, she had accumulated 88 flight hours and successfully passed her aviation knowledge test. She also spoke about enjoying the opportunity to pursue something different from other students. “I like being different than everyone, so to me I think it’s cool that like it’s not really an opportunity,” She further explained: “I just didn’t do it, and this is how it ended up. But I think it’s cool. Some people think that it’s weird that I can fly planes, but I can’t drive a car, I mean I can but, a lot of people think it’s funny. I think it’s funny, and I now want my \[driver’s\] license really bad,” Gadelha later graduated from American Flyers, a flight school based in Texas with a branch in Florida. Her ambition was to become a commercial airline pilot. In a recent social media post, she also shared a video of herself and her boyfriend, Justin, flying together. The caption read: “How often do you see 2 pilots under 21 with a commercial, multi-engine, instrument, CFI/CFI-I \[Certified Flight Instructor/Certified Flight Instructor – Instrument\],” Meanwhile, federal investigators are working to establish what caused the Learjet to lose control and crash. Although her family has identified her as the co-pilot, authorities have not yet publicly released the official identities of all nine victims. The cause of the crash also remains undetermined. The tragedy has drawn attention to the young aviator's achievements and her dream of building a career in commercial aviation. Sources: New York Post, Reuters, CBS12, Aviation International News.
