Twelve-year-old Austin Tapia was living with his family in Phoenix, Arizona, when a tragedy unfolded inside his own home. On March 11, 2014, a child in the family called 911 because they were frightened by the behavior of 27-year-old Andrew Ward, Austin's half-brother. The child explained that Ward had brought home a suspicious-looking box and would not allow anyone into his room. They were worried he might have something dangerous. The child asked police to come and check the room. But the following day, March 12, tragedy struck. Austin was home with Andrew while their mother and two sisters went out to dinner. Later that evening, Andrew called 911 from a nearby convenience store and reported that he had stabbed someone. Police arrived and discovered that Austin had suffered multiple fatal stab wounds. When investigators asked Andrew why he had done it, he reportedly said he simply felt like killing. The case became even more disturbing when, just three weeks later, Andrew killed his 33-year-old jail cellmate, Douglas Walker, while awaiting trial. In August 2017, Andrew pleaded guilty to both murders. He was subsequently sentenced to two life sentences. Austin was only 12 years old. He should have been worrying about school, friends, games and growing up. Instead, his life ended in a tragedy that devastated his family. And the heartbreaking question remains: could something have been done when the family first asked for help? Rest peacefully, Austin. #rip #TrueCrimeStory #Justice #RealLifeStories #ChildSafety
