@browneyedgurl801: A Halloween costume referencing South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem and her husband, Bryon Noem, went viral this week after a social media user, posting under the handle @harryallen_1 on X, shared photos declaring the pair the winners of Halloween for the look, which included a skeleton dog as a prop. The costume plays on Noem’s own account, published in her 2024 memoir “No Going Back,” in which she described sh*oting and k*lling her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, after calling the animal “dangerous” and “untrainable.” The admission drew widespread backlash at the time, including from PETA, which later released its own “Cricket’s Revenge” costume featuring a mask of Noem’s face, a camouflage hat reading “Noem: Puppy K*ller,” and a stuffed dog biting the wearer’s neck. Noem, who now serves as U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, has defended her decision to k*ll the dog as evidence of her willingness to make hard choices. The costume trend referencing the episode has resurfaced repeatedly around Halloween in the years since the memoir’s release, with the skeleton-dog prop this year functioning as a visual callback to Cricket. The post calling the pair Halloween’s winners spread quickly online, adding to a long-running stream of costumes, parody merchandise, and commentary that have kept the Cricket story attached to Noem’s public image well beyond her time as South Dakota’s governor.
