I work in sixth grade at the middle school I went to. I felt like it was easier than when I went through sixth grade, I went through some of the work I did that my mom kept. It’s so much different now…

I can’t speak on elementary or middle level, but I think that the secondary level is much easier than 15 years ago when I was in high school.

Life is also on demand now. School is one of the only things that's actually structured and you can't opt out of or modify based on your wants.

Yes we don’t match what they need to learn developmentally with what we force them to learn. Kindergarten should be play based not reading based. Too much too soon. It’s making us all miserable!

As a childless ELA teacher, I’ve felt pressure to increase rigor for sure. I do also hear the argument that AI can do writing for them in the real world and Idk if I have a meaningful argument

I saw a high school teacher say she had to start teaching phonics and it shocked me. A teenager that can’t read? Crazy. What’s going on?

I actually think it’s too easy. My kids complain of being bored all the time. I think school should focus on debate, rhetoric , discussions, social skills, team work, and projects- nothing else. No homework, worksheets, devices

I disagree. there are a ton of kids just winging it without parental supervision that are doing just as poorly. We see a kid struggling, we dont know their distress level, just saying "you can do hard things" is not going to solve their inability to self soothe, its going to push the distress further out and cause other health and behavior issues. we need early intervention for scaffolding stress and distress on a developmental level that is appropriate, while watching for red flags in the environment outside of school. we put more pressure on these kids, they will explode later either internally or externally.

Too hard? We’ve decreased the difficulty and rigor so much it drives me insane!

Investing For The Plot :
The other day I asked my 1st grade students if they’d rather be a kid or a grown up, they ALL said kid. Their reasons were all some variation of “I don’t have to do anything, everyone else does it for me”. THIS IS A PROBLEM

I think kids need more opportunities to do difficult things that they are interested in to help build tolerance for things they aren’t interested in

The demand is higher at school. You have to complete things, start tasks and be engaged. This isn’t something every kid is used to. They are used to seeking demand when they want it, not having it put on them.

If it's harder, it's because we have lowered our standards so much that so little is required to get through that no shortcomings are remediated in a reasonable time frame. I agree that culture outside of school demands so little of citizens or the audience. I'm not sure that school is doing much better though.

Math standards have gotten extremely harder since I was in school. I feel like the workload is not harder, but rushing kids to 6 classes a day with like no break in between is exhausting. I know because I’m exhausted. I’m also exhausted when i go to a professional development and I’m expected to work at a high productivity level for 6+ hours. Also, sometimes there are so many steps required to turn in an assignment. For example, take a picture, upload, send an email, etc

I think when we took play out of K, we made it too hard. Then we had to spoon feed in many cases to help the students navigate the cognitive demands that are not developmentally appropriate. Aaaaaaaand now, we’ve got teenagers who don’t think they need to try.

I now front load the parts that are difficult, "this section is difficult, and I wrote it that way BECAUSE I believe you are ready to tackle it" and then I do NOT solve it for them until they have worked through some productive struggle. I've anecdotally seen WAY more grit from the kids when I preface thougher activities this way

I was talking with a coworker just today about the same thing. We have a lot of middle school students who just quit when a task becomes a productive struggle. My focus this week is educating and motivating students on the power of perseverance.

it's because they don't want to do it. straight up. that's one of the skills they're learning, is the ability to prioritize and push through when they don't want to do things. but it also means that a good deal of the time they will not enjoy school! i think that's fine

Yes BUT if we can reduce the cognitive load by automating what we can in the classroom does help. The other thing I do is work to set up a positive class culture that supports curiosity and risk taking. I can’t control what happens outside my classroom, but I can engage them meaningfully and support them as they learn.

For young kids? Yes. Absolutely. We took all of the play-based learning out of the elementary classroom. I teach in the same district I grew up in and the different is huge.

I remember being a teenager always stating I hated school even though I loved it. It was social death to admit you like school

I think, for the most part, my students don’t actually hate school. Maybe this is unique to my situation but that’s just not the vibe I get from them. However, I am a music teacher. So I do teach a “fun” class.
