The South Carolina Supreme Court has overturned Alex Murdaugh’s murder convictions, ruling that jury interference by former Colleton County Clerk Becky Hill denied him a fair trial. Murdaugh was convicted in 2023 for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, after prosecutors argued he killed them to distract from mounting financial crimes. But in a unanimous decision, the state’s highest court found Hill improperly influenced jurors by making comments about Murdaugh’s credibility and allegedly pressuring the panel toward a guilty verdict. The court described Hill’s conduct as “shocking jury interference” carried out without the knowledge of the judge or attorneys involved in the case. Justices ruled the state failed to overcome the presumption that her actions prejudiced the jury, meaning Murdaugh is now entitled to a new trial. Despite the ruling, Murdaugh will remain behind bars due to multiple state and federal convictions tied to financial fraud schemes that resulted in decades-long prison sentences. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced prosecutors will move quickly to retry Murdaugh for the murders. Hill, who resigned in 2024 amid investigations into misconduct, later pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, perjury, and misconduct in office for mishandling sealed evidence and lying under oath. While those charges did not directly involve jury tampering, Murdaugh’s legal team argued her actions throughout the trial compromised the integrity of the verdict. The Supreme Court also warned prosecutors that if evidence of Murdaugh’s financial crimes is introduced again during retrial, it must be presented far more efficiently and without unnecessary inflammatory detail. #fyp #viral

A federal judge has rejected an attempt by the man accused of plotting to assassinate President Donald Trump to remove U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche from prosecuting his case. The defendant, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, argued that Pirro’s friendship with Trump and the presence of both officials at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner created a conflict of interest. However, U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ruled Monday that those claims were not enough to justify disqualifying either official. In his decision, McFadden stated that neither Pirro’s relationship with the president nor comments made by Pirro and Blanche following the incident demonstrated any legal conflict that would prevent them from handling the prosecution. Allen also challenged public remarks made by both officials after his arrest, including statements in which Pirro described the alleged attack and vowed to aggressively pursue the case. He further sought to have Pirro’s entire office removed, arguing there was an appearance of impropriety. The judge disagreed, noting that while the circumstances were unusual, neither Pirro nor Blanche were likely to serve as trial witnesses or qualify as victims under the law. As a result, the court found no basis to remove them from the case. Allen was indicted in May on charges related to an alleged assassination attempt targeting Trump and the shooting of a Secret Service officer. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the maximum penalties allowed under the law if he is convicted.#fyp #viral
