I don’t know why more English teachers aren’t talking about this, because everyone I know who has tried it RAVES about it! Teachers love it because it’s perfect for teaching word choice, structure, sentence variety, etc. and students love it because it seems like a piece of cake but it’s actually quite challenging. Hear me out, it’s a… 🥁drumroll please🥁 100-word horror story mini unit! 👻 Your students will think you’re doing them a favor (and you better believe I let them think that 😉). Then they start drafting, blow way past 100 words, and realize every single word has to earn its spot. It forces kids to care about the craft moves they usually skim right past: 1️⃣ Concise writing. We play “Sentences that Slay,” where they rewrite wordy sentences with fewer words. 2️⃣ Precise word choice. “Walked” won’t cut it when your character could creep, stumble, or freeze. 3️⃣ Sentence variety. A short sentence after a long one makes a reader gasp, and kids finally SEE how it works. 4️⃣ Revision. They rework their stories again and again because they want them to be creepy enough to scare their friends! My students told me this was the writing assignment they learned the most from. And I didn’t take a single story home to grade! I read drafts while they revise (a 100-word story takes seconds) and grade with a simple rubric while they share their stories in class. 🙌 That’s the kind of Halloween treat I need. 🎃 Want to try it this week? Check out my complete mini unit! It has 7 to 10 days of lessons, examples, bell ringers, revision stations, and a rubric. (Short on time? You can squeeze it into a week.) #englishteacher #teachersoftiktok
