Data centers generate enormous amounts of heat, so building them in freezing places or underwater might seem like an easy way to keep them cool. But there are several problems. Cold countries such as Sweden, Finland and Iceland already attract data centers because cold air and water can reduce cooling costs. However, even in the Arctic, these facilities still need huge amounts of electricity, fast internet connections, workers and reliable transport. Remote locations also make repairs and equipment deliveries more difficult. Putting data centers underwater has been tested too. In 2018, Microsoft placed an experimental data center off Scotland's Orkney Islands. It contained 864 servers and operated underwater for more than two years. Microsoft found that its underwater servers had an eighth the failure rate of a similar group on land. The company said the results showed that the sealed underwater environment could improve reliability. But repairing equipment underwater is difficult. A damaged unit may need to be brought back to the surface before technicians can fix it. Microsoft later stopped pursuing underwater data centers, but said the experiment provided useful lessons for its other projects. The biggest challenge is that data centers need more than cooling. They also need reliable electricity, fast connections, affordable construction and easy maintenance.
