Senate Minority Leader #ChuckSchumer declared on Saturday that Senate Democrats will withhold the votes needed to advance a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), following a deadly shooting by immigration agents in Minneapolis earlier that day. "The tragic events unfolding in Minnesota are both appalling and unacceptable in any American city," Schumer stated. "While Democrats have pushed for common-sense reforms in the DHS funding bill, the Republicans' failure to challenge President Trump has left the bill woefully inadequate in addressing the abuses by ICE." He went on to confirm, "I will vote no, and Senate Democrats will not support moving forward with the appropriations bill if it includes DHS funding." The House passed a funding package on Thursday, which included a separate measure for DHS funding, and sent the bills to the Senate for approval. The legislation also covered other key federal departments, with a Jan. 30 deadline looming for a government funding deal. The DHS funding bill was expected to be combined with the other packages in hopes of passing them all together. In order for the measure to pass the Senate, Republicans will likely need to secure the support of at least eight Democrats, as Sen. Rand Paul has consistently voted against appropriations bills. Should the funding package fail to advance in the Senate, the government could face another partial shutdown. Schumer’s announcement came just hours after a U.S. immigration officer shot and killed 37-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti in south Minneapolis. This marks the second deadly shooting in the city by federal immigration agents this month. Pretti, an intensive care nurse, was identified as the victim in Saturday's incident. In early January, Renee Good was also killed by an ICE officer in Minneapolis. Both victims were U.S. citizens, and videos of both shootings have spread rapidly online. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the officers involved in the shooting, stating that Pretti allegedly approached U.S. Border Patrol agents while they were conducting "targeted" immigration enforcement, armed with a 9mm handgun. Noem added that the officers tried to disarm Pretti, but he responded violently, prompting them to fire in self-defense. Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, both of whom had previously voted with Republicans to end last year’s 43-day government shutdown, also announced on Saturday that they would oppose the DHS funding measure. Additionally, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine, another Democrat who had previously crossed party lines, confirmed Friday that he would not support the bill.#fyp #viral
