@japdmedia26: Detroit, Michigan — Democratic Congresswoman Haley Stevens has officially endorsed Republican Mike Rogers for the U.S. Senate, creating a major political surprise just days before Michigan's election. Stevens appeared alongside Rogers at Perfecting Church in Detroit on Sunday, November 1, after her planned appearance with Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed was called off. The endorsement followed weeks of disagreements between Stevens and El-Sayed, who narrowly defeated her in Michigan's August Democratic primary. Their disagreement centered partly on Israel. Stevens criticized an advertisement from an outside political group that linked U.S. support for Israel to rising grocery prices and demanded that El-Sayed condemn it. El-Sayed distanced his campaign from the advertisement and said he disagreed with its contents. Stevens had previously endorsed El-Sayed after losing the primary and recently reaffirmed that she intended to support him. However, the relationship deteriorated further after El-Sayed's campaign asked her to stay away from campaign events. Explaining her decision in an endorsement video, Stevens said: “Our Democratic nominee for Senate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away,” “And he’s right. And that’s why I am endorsing Mike Rogers for the United States Senate today.” Meanwhile, El-Sayed attended a separate church service with prominent Democrats, including Rep. Jim Clyburn, Rep. Debbie Dingell and Maryland Senator Angela Alsobrooks. El-Sayed had previously criticized Stevens for reopening disagreements from the primary, saying: “So while Congresswoman Stevens seems intent on relitigating a primary that ended three months ago, let’s all focus on the task at hand: that’s beating Mike Rogers, holding Trump accountable, and getting money out of politics,” The controversy also follows Stevens's fiancé, Jason Turkish, publicly announcing that he would vote for Rogers rather than El-Sayed. The political fallout has reportedly affected Stevens's congressional office, with her longtime chief of staff resigning following the endorsement, according to the Associated Press. The Michigan Senate contest is particularly important because Democrats are trying to retain the seat currently held by retiring Senator Gary Peters. The election is scheduled for November 3, with Rogers and El-Sayed competing for the seat. Stevens's endorsement has added another major twist to an already tense Michigan Senate race. #DetroitMichigan #HaleyStevens #MikeRogers #AbdulElSayed #japd
