Since most of the comme is just mentioned the boiling and death I'll explain what I found after looking it up.
So yes, during the boiling process they die. After the silk is collected the puppet, the shriveled up bodies that were inside the cocoon, can be used in a few different ways. The carcass is high in protein so it can be eaten, used as fertilizer or used as animal or fish feed.
There is an alternate way of collecting the silk that does not require killing the pupae. They call it peace silk. The cocoon is left intact until the mother emerges and the broken shorter fibers that are left behind are then spun instead of reeled. The fibers are broken and short because the mother chews and breaks the continuous fibers to leave the cocoon.
The process of spinning the broken filament is closer to how wool or cotton is spun and causes the fabric to be softer, more textured and slightly matte.
Peace silk adds about another 10 days to the process and the resulting silk is a fraction of what is collected with reeling instead of spinning. The process also generally costs a lot more to spin instead of reel.

Seeing a craft done start to finish is amazing. Support real artisans and natural fibers. Plastic and variants of it will always cause more harm.
