Above 55? Please take these precautions before, during and after a long-distance journey to reduce your risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot that can form in the deep veins of your legs. BEFORE YOUR TRIP • Stay hydrated. • Take your prescribed medications as directed. • If you have a history of blood clots or other risk factors, speak with your doctor about preventive measures, including compression stockings. DURING YOUR TRIP • Avoid sitting in one position for too long. • Move your legs and ankles back and forth every 20–30 minutes. • Stand, stretch and walk briefly every 45–60 minutes when safe. • Ensure you have enough legroom to move comfortably. • Drink water regularly. AFTER YOUR TRIP Watch out for swelling, pain, warmth or redness in one leg. If these occur, seek urgent medical attention. Do not massage the swollen leg or attempt to treat it at home. Sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing up blood or fainting could indicate a clot has travelled to the lungs. Seek emergency medical care immediately. Remember, DVT symptoms can develop days or even weeks after travelling. Share this with your parents, grandparents and anyone preparing for a long journey. A little preparation can make a difference. #tallnigeriandoctor #draizident
