Weeping. I lost my Dean in July and am shattered, but I foster failed a shelter pup who isn’t the same breed at all and haven’t been able to see myself bonding with him as strongly as I did Dean, but this is such a comforting take. Thank you for sharing.

I think it’s been really important how you’ve shown the weird impending anticipatory grief. I don’t want to say it’s worse than sudden grief it’s just hard in a different way. I’ve faced this with my senior cat who has substantial mental decline. Knowing it’s close but not knowing how close is exhausting. Doing research and never finding the right answer because it isn’t there. Nobody can tell you what’s the right decision for your beloved pet. You just have to make the best informed decision possible. There’s always the what if it’s too early? what if it’s too late? Maybe after the choice is made and the deed is done everything is clearer in hindsight. What you’d change and what you’d do the same. Marlow is still with me and I don’t know how much longer I can say that. All this to say I empathize with you more than you could realize. I worry I won’t recover and I’m so tired.

I lost my soul dog Harley in 2015. I got my Dug shortly after. What i didn't know was that i was lucky enough to strike gold twice, and Dug was also my soul dog, though he was so different from Harley. The connection i built with him was something i never thought I'd have again when I lost Harley. I've loved all my dogs, but those 2 boys....I'll never get over them. Now that I've lost them both, I cry for them both. Allowing myself to love another dog has been so incredibly healing.

As someone has lost 4 dogs and currently has a 5th, I think they were all exactly right for each chapter they were in my life. And do I wish I could keep them all with me for my entire lifetime? Also, yes.

I'm team get another dog ASAP. or at least as soon as it feels right for you. i think you can still actively be mourning while bonding with a new dog. we lose a lot in life we never get back. if your gram passes, that's it, you don't get another. when we lose a dog obviously we never get another just like them, but it is a relationship and experience you get to have again. it won't be the same. but it's not like having a dog is once in a lifetime. I started looking at adoptable dogs the day after we put our 18 year old dog to sleep. and the dog i adopted 3 weeks later was one I saw that day. I'm significantly sadder without a dog. I cried daily for months about my last dog but I cried less than I would have if I didn't have a dog. my girl now is my best friend and the first dog that's ever been just 'mine'.

my first dog, bunny, was undoubtedly my soul dog, my favorite dog. but jolene is also my favorite dog now, too. she’s completely different, our relationship is completely different, but our love is just as strong. sending you and rudder lots of love and strength, and thank you as always for sharing the journey 🖤

Maddie, Any pet that comes into your life is going to be special. The amount of the thought, training, and care you've put into rudder is amazing! So many people love him (not just us on the internet) because you have done such a good job at adding him to your life. Not just having him but truly adding him. Its a deep thing to witness
