When a mother constantly protects her son from accountability, excuses his cheating, justifies his mistreatment of women, and demands that no woman ever come before her, she isn’t teaching him healthy love. She’s teaching him entitlement and dependency. And when that son becomes a grown man, his partner may end up paying the price for behaviors he was never taught to take responsibility for. Not every man raised this way becomes abusive, but these patterns can contribute to unhealthy and sometimes abusive relationships. Being his mother does not make you responsible for every decision he makes. But repeatedly enabling his harmful behavior is not love. It’s enabling.
