What about adding a carpet wall? That way they can scratch on that and or climb. You could also add little platforms like that one see-through bowl where you could see them having smooshed sleepy faces

For the door down, they make cat doors you can put in that have a latch on there where if for any reason you needed them to stay down there (IE. someone coming to do repairs on the house or moving furniture etc) you can lock it so they can’t come through.
