@beyondthecasefilenm: For most local, county and state law enforcement agencies, the path starts in patrol. The requirements vary by agency and state, but becoming a detective usually means first building experience as a police officer. Patrol is where you develop the foundation: interviewing people, recognizing evidence, writing thorough reports, and following an investigation wherever the facts lead. Want to stand out? Pay attention to details. Ask questions. Keep learning. Document your work clearly, and follow through—even when the case gets difficult or the paperwork gets tedious. It’s also a job that doesn’t fit everyone. Some officers try investigations and discover they prefer patrol or another specialty. Others find their calling and spend the rest of their careers working cases. There are other routes, too. Some federal agencies hire directly into criminal investigator or special agent positions without requiring prior patrol service, although applicants still have to meet education, experience, selection, and training requirements. My advice: Start developing the habits of a good investigator before you ever get the title. #BeyondtheCasefile #AskaDetective
