In 1960, scientists calculated that if population growth kept going as it was, it would hit a mathematical "Doomsday" around Friday, November 13, 2026. Humanity, they wrote, would be "squeezed to death." The date happens to fall on a Friday the 13th. The more interesting part, however, is how they got there, and what their equation overlooked. Heinz von Foerster, Patricia Mora, and Lawrence Amiot collected 24 estimates of the world's population covering roughly 2,000 years. Their model described growth that was faster than exponential. Under exponential growth, a population doubles at regular intervals. In their model, each doubling took less time than the one before, so the curve eventually shot toward infinity at a finite date. The researchers suggested that cooperation helped explain this acceleration. More people meant more potential inventors, farmers, and collaborators, and their advances could support an even larger population, which reinforced the cycle. Unlike earlier warnings that humanity would run out of food, this scenario assumed that human ingenuity could keep expanding our resources. Still, an equation that predicts infinitely many people only shows that its assumptions must eventually break down. It does not show that infinity can physically happen. And population growth was already approaching a turning point. The global growth rate, measured as a percentage, peaked in the early 1960s and has declined since. The world kept adding people, but no longer at an endlessly accelerating pace. Much of the earlier surge came from falling death rates, as sanitation, nutrition, and medicine improved and more children survived into adulthood. Later, birth rates dropped across much of the world, thanks to better access to education and contraception and changes in family life. That reshaped the curve. The UN's 2024 projections expect the global population to peak at around 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, followed by a gradual decline. The world still faces serious challenges involving food, resources, and inequality. But the November 2026 "Doomsday" belongs to a model whose historical pattern did not continue. #DoomsdayTheory #HumanPopulation #ScienceFacts #FridayThe13th #samcloud33
