1. you don’t have to start where you want to end up. i’ve seen dozens of writers start as PAs in art departments, production, anything they could get. working in another department will teach you so much - just make sure you do a good job AND people know where you’re headed ultimately! 2. networking is important, but not in the weird, transactional way people make it sound. be good at your job, be kind, and be someone people actually want to spend 12+ hours a day with. those relationships will take you further than you think. 3. there are SO many jobs in this industry that most people have never even heard of. not everyone wants to be a director, actor, or DP. there are entire departments full of incredibly talented people doing things you probably didn’t even know were careers. 4. being creative is only part of the job. so much of what we do is problem-solving, managing personalities, putting out fires, and figuring out how to make something happen with approximately zero time and zero money lol 5. no two days are the same. one day i’m sitting at a desk staring at floor plans and answering 100 emails, and the next i’m standing on a virtual production stage pretending we’re somewhere in the mountains. it’s one of my favorite things about this job. 6. the hours are no joke. it’s not all glamorous sets and movie magic. it’s early mornings, late nights, canceled plans, and sometimes having very little energy left for your actual life. finding a balance is something i’m still figuring out. 7. you can learn SO much just by paying attention. ask questions, watch how other departments work, and don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know something. some of the most valuable things i’ve learned have come from simply being around people who are really good at what they do. 8. it’s a very small industry. seriously. you’ll work with the same people over and over again, sometimes years apart. your reputation matters, and people absolutely remember how you treated them when things got stressful. 9. the uncertainty is probably the hardest part for me. you can work nonstop for months and then suddenly have no idea when your next job is coming. learning to enjoy the downtime without constantly worrying about what’s next? still working on that one 🙃 10. you can absolutely love what you do and still question whether you want to keep doing it. especially right now, with how much our industry is changing. some days i’m exhausted by it all, and other days i look around and can’t believe i get to do this for a living. #film #television #artdirection #hollywood 🎬
