🚨 STEALING ART IS NEVER OKAY. ‼️ I never wanted to address this publicly. I believe in community, education, and uplifting one another. However, I also believe we have a responsibility to protect artists and respectfully honor culture. Before posting, I made several attempts to address this privately with ALENA GUMENNAYA ‘STEPMOTHER’ of DANCEHALL. @Alena Gumennaya After text conversations, she acknowledged her actions, expressed remorse, and agreed to make a public statement taking responsibility. I gave her the time she requested, but that acknowledgment has yet to happen. I have all the receipts of these interactions. Please be kind everyone 🙏🏾. A few things I hope we can all take away from this: 1. ACCOUNTABILITY MATTERS. We all make mistakes, but how we respond to them matters. Private apologies are important, but public actions of this magnitude deserve public accountability. 2. RESPECT THE ARTISTS. Original creative work deserves proper permission, credit, and recognition. The people behind the art should never be overlooked. 3. DANCERS: PROTECT YOURSELVES. Ask questions, understand the origins of the work, and choose leaders who value integrity and transparency. 4. HONOR THE CULTURE. Stepping is deeply rooted in Black culture and historically Black Greek-letter organizations. It carries history, identity, community, and meaning beyond the movement itself. Cultural appreciation begins with education, acknowledgment, and respect. 5. LEADERS AND ORGANIZATIONS, DO BETTER. Let’s create spaces where originality is protected, artists are credited, and cultural contributions are honored. I want to leave room for conversation, learning, and growth. I believe people can do better, and I genuinely hope this becomes an opportunity to do so. This isn’t about tearing anyone down. It’s about setting a standard for the creative community we all contribute to. RESPECT THE ART. CREDIT THE ARTISTS. HONOR THE CULTURE. LEAD WITH INTEGRITY. ❤️ We can hold people accountable while still allowing room for humanity. Both can exist. #art #accountability #culture #ownership
