Because it was illegal and he probably felt violated and wanted to defend himself. He probably also wanted to explain himself and his statements about his son as well. Either to validate his beliefs and relieve his guilt… or to explain it away to protect his son.

It’s because it was severely illegal. You have to disclose that you’re recording something before you recorded on the phone. Otherwise it’s wire tap.
