A Virginia mother has been charged with murder after authorities say her 5-year-old son died from devastating internal injuries caused by repeated physical abuse. According to the Newport News Police Department, 27-year-old Katrina Marie Sudberry faces charges of second-degree murder and felony child abuse. She is currently being held at the Newport News Jail. Police responded to an apartment on Walden Pond Court around 2:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving a report of an unresponsive child. When officers entered the home, they found Sudberry crying in a bedroom while the young boy, identified in court documents as J.H., was lying on the floor in only his underwear with bruises covering much of his body. Emergency crews rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where he later died. During questioning, investigators say Sudberry admitted she regularly used corporal punishment to discipline her son, including striking him with her hands and a belt and forcing him to perform exercises such as push-ups and wall squats. Court records indicate she acknowledged using a belt on him just two days before the incident and said she had been his sole caregiver for the previous three weeks. Sudberry allegedly told investigators the boy had been lethargic and vomited earlier that morning but said she believed she could monitor him at home while completing household chores. She claimed she later discovered him unresponsive on the floor, called her mother for advice, and was instructed to dial 911. When detectives asked why she had not sought medical treatment sooner, Sudberry reportedly said she “knew how it would look,” referring to the extensive bruising on the child’s body. An autopsy revealed the boy suffered catastrophic blunt-force injuries, including multiple lacerations to his liver, damage to his kidney, stomach, diaphragm and intestines. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by blunt force trauma. Investigators said the pattern of injuries was consistent with the types of punishment Sudberry described during interviews. Police also recovered a belt and its broken buckle from the apartment as evidence. A neighbor told local media she witnessed Sudberry forcefully dragging the child to a car the day before emergency responders were called, recalling that the interaction appeared unusually aggressive. Sudberry is scheduled to appear in court again on Sept. 9.#fyp #viral
