Thank you for this. I’ve been in a very similar situation with someone who repeatedly threatened to take their own life. After ten years of an emotional rollercoaster, countless attempts to help, and bailing her out financially and emotionally more times than I can count, I offered advice one last time and was met with, “I’m good on advice.” Eventually, I had to set boundaries, and she couldn’t accept them. Sadly, nothing has changed. You can love someone, care deeply about their well-being, and still recognize that you cannot keep sacrificing your own mental health to save them. Sometimes stepping away is the only healthy choice, even when someone is at rock bottom.
